Heather agreed to meet the Buick Skylark out at the exact same spot, and she ran down Greentree Lane with her heart pounding. As she jumped the fence and scurried toward her house, she could hardly believe she was actually running away. Heather had asked Rod to take her to see Jeremy one last time, and Rod had offered to do that. It hardly seemed possible that she would never see her boyfriend again. She hoped she could talk Jeremy into going with them, but in her heart, she knew Jeremy would never say yes.
Undetected by her parents, Heather flew through the side door and back into her room, where she pulled together some of her favorite jeans, jewelry, and T-shirts. She grabbed her teddy bear and artist sketchbook, crammed as much as she could into two backpacks, and then dialed Jeanine. But Jeanine couldn’t talk; she was in the middle of cake and ice cream. Heather had forgotten about Jeanine’s birthday celebration with her family. Jeanine didn’t have time to hear what Heather had to say. She was busy. She rushed Heather off the phone and told her to call back.
Heather hung up and tiptoed around to the kitchen. Before she went to sit with her dad in the family room, she snuck open Rick’s wallet and pulled out fifty bucks. She stuck the money in her jeans and quietly went and sat by Rick on his favorite couch, where, for some strange reason, he happened to be flipping through pages of his high school yearbook. Heather had never seen it before, and she looked with interest as her dad showed her his childhood friends from Winter Park. He pointed to a few ex-girlfriends, remarking about how “hot” one of them was back then, and Heather looked at the image of a young woman in a miniskirt and go-go boots and just laughed.
As she leafed through his high school pictures, Heather felt like she was viewing ancient history. Her dad’s outfits were so funny, his hairstyles so outdated. She sat for ten minutes and listened while Rick reminisced about the good old days, then slipped away to go see her mom.
Ruth was in her bedroom watching a made-for-TV movie, some Lifetime family drama, and Heather lay down on her mom’s pillow, right next to Ruth on the quilted bedspread, pretending to be her little baby girl again. The two of them just lay there watching the television show, hugging each other without saying a word, and after a short while, during a commercial break, Heather got up and went to make a phone call.
“I’m leaving with Rod,” she told Jeremy, her voice quivering. “We’re heading over there for a minute so I can see you before I go.”
“Why are you doing this, Heather? It’s stupid,” Jeremy said, trying to coax her, “you’re just gonna get caught and wind up in big trouble.”
“I have to go, that’s why, you just don’t understand. Why don’t you come with me? It’ll be an adventure.
